Why is historical vehicle data missing?

Issue Title

  • Historical data missing

Issue Summary

  • Historical vehicle data may be missing when the tracking device did not generate or transmit data during a specific period, when data was delayed or lost during transmission, or when the system did not receive, store, or process the data correctly.

Symptoms / How to Identify

  • No vehicle data is available for a specific date or time period.
  • Trip history contains gaps.
  • Historical locations are missing from the map.
  • Reports do not show expected vehicle activity.
  • Playback shows incomplete or missing movement.
  • Data is available before and after a specific period but missing in between.
  • No corresponding records are available in Status/Raw Data for the affected period.

Information Required Before Troubleshooting

Collect the following information:

  • Vehicle/Object name or ID
  • Device IMEI/Serial Number
  • Device model and protocol
  • Exact date and time range for which data is missing
  • Expected vehicle activity during that period
  • Last available data before the gap
  • First available data after the gap
  • Relevant Status/Raw Data
  • Screenshot of the missing data
  • Whether the issue affects one vehicle or multiple vehicles

Troubleshooting Steps

A. Check on Device

  • Verify whether the device was powered ON during the affected period.
  • Check whether the device had GPS and network connectivity.
  • Verify whether the device generated GPS/location data during the missing period.
  • Check whether the device stored data locally during a network interruption.
  • Verify whether stored data was retransmitted after network connectivity was restored.
  • Check the device's data transmission interval and configuration.
  • Review device logs or available diagnostic information, if applicable.

B. Check in System

  • Check the vehicle's Status/Raw Data for the affected date and time.
  • Verify the last data received before the gap.
  • Verify the first data received after the gap.
  • Check whether any data was received during the missing period.
  • Check the same date/time in History, Reports, and Playback.
  • Verify whether the data is missing only from one module or across the entire system.
  • Check whether other vehicles using the same device/protocol have similar gaps.

C. Compare and Identify

  • No data generated by the device: Investigate device power, GPS, network, or hardware.
  • Device generated/stored data but system did not receive it: Investigate network or communication issues.
  • Data exists in Status/Raw Data but is missing from reports/history/playback: Investigate system processing, storage, or module-specific issues.
  • Data is available but delayed: Investigate transmission and timestamp differences.

Possible Causes

  • Device was powered OFF.
  • Vehicle battery or device power issue.
  • GPS or network connectivity loss.
  • Device stopped transmitting data.
  • Data stored locally but not retransmitted.
  • SIM/network issue.
  • Device configuration or firmware issue.
  • Communication/protocol issue.
  • Data processing or storage failure.
  • Report, history, or playback processing issue.

Resolution / Action

First identify whether the missing data was generated by the device and received by the system.

If the device did not generate or transmit the data, investigate the device, power, GPS, SIM, and network connectivity. If the system received the data but it is missing from history, reports, or playback, escalate to the technical/system team for data processing or storage investigation.

Provide the vehicle ID, IMEI, affected date/time range, last and first available data, raw data, and relevant screenshots when escalating.
