Why does the vehicle show as moving when it is stopped?

Issue Summary

The vehicle may show as Moving even when it is physically stopped when the tracking device reports a speed above the configured movement threshold or when GPS data contains inaccurate or fluctuating coordinates. This can cause the platform to interpret the vehicle as moving when it is actually stationary.

Symptoms / How to Identify

  • Vehicle status shows Moving while the vehicle is physically stopped.
  • Vehicle speed displays a value greater than zero while stationary.
  • Vehicle location may jump slightly around the actual position.
  • Distance may increase even though the vehicle has not moved.
  • Movement status changes between Moving and Stopped while the vehicle remains stationary.
  • Raw data may show speed or changing GPS coordinates when the vehicle is stopped.

Information Required Before Troubleshooting

Collect the following information:

  • Vehicle/Object name or ID
  • Device IMEI/Serial Number
  • Device model and protocol
  • Date and time when the issue occurred
  • Actual vehicle status
  • Speed displayed on the platform
  • Latest GPS coordinates
  • Latest data from the Status/Raw Data section
  • Whether the issue is continuous or intermittent
  • Whether the issue occurs at a particular location
  • Any recent device configuration changes

Troubleshooting Steps

A. Check on Device

  • Confirm the vehicle is stationary.
  • Check the speed value generated by the device.
  • Check whether GPS coordinates are fluctuating.
  • Check GPS signal quality.
  • Verify device configuration.
  • Check movement-related parameters sent by the device.

B. Check in System

  • Open Status/Raw Data.
  • Check the received speed and GPS values.
  • Check the configured movement/stop threshold.
  • Verify the movement status calculated by the system.
  • Compare raw speed with the status shown on the map.

C. Compare and Identify

  • Device reports speed > threshold → device/GPS issue.
  • Device reports correct zero/low speed but system shows Moving → system threshold/calculation issue

Possible Causes

  • GPS position fluctuations while the vehicle is stationary.
  • Poor GPS signal or GPS interference.
  • Incorrect speed data received from the device.
  • Incorrect movement/stop threshold configuration.
  • Device firmware or hardware issue.
  • Incorrect speed or movement parameter mapping.
  • Delayed or inconsistent GPS data.
  • Device configuration issue.
  • Vehicle movement caused by towing or minor physical movement.
  • Platform-side movement-status calculation issue.

Resolution / Action

Verify the speed and GPS coordinates received from the device and compare them with the vehicle's actual status. If the device is reporting incorrect speed or fluctuating GPS data, investigate the device's GPS signal, configuration, firmware, or hardware. If the raw data is correct but the platform incorrectly calculates the movement status, escalate the issue to the technical/platform team with the vehicle ID, IMEI, timestamp, speed value, GPS coordinates, and relevant raw data.
