Why are duplicate locations appearing for the vehicle?

Issue Title

  • Duplicate locations

Issue Summary

Duplicate locations may appear when the tracking device sends the same location data more than once, when previously stored data is retransmitted, or when the system processes the same data packet multiple times. This can result in repeated location points in the map, reports, history, or playback.

Symptoms / How to Identify

  • The same location appears multiple times for the vehicle.
  • Identical or nearly identical latitude and longitude values appear repeatedly.
  • Multiple records have the same or very similar timestamps.
  • Duplicate points are visible in Playback or historical tracking.
  • Vehicle history contains repeated location records.
  • Distance or trip calculations may appear incorrect because of repeated records.

Information Required Before Troubleshooting

Collect the following information:

  • Vehicle/Object name or ID
  • Device IMEI/Serial Number
  • Device model and protocol
  • Date and time when duplicate locations were observed
  • Duplicate latitude and longitude values
  • Relevant data from Status/Raw Data
  • Screenshot of the duplicate locations
  • Whether duplicates occur continuously or only during a specific period
  • Whether the issue affects one vehicle or multiple vehicles

Troubleshooting Steps

A. Check on Device

  • Check whether the device is transmitting the same GPS coordinates repeatedly.
  • Compare the timestamps of consecutive data packets.
  • Check whether the device is sending identical packet data more than once.
  • Verify the device's configured data transmission interval.
  • Check whether the device stored data during a network outage and retransmitted it after connectivity was restored.
  • Check device network connectivity for interruptions or reconnects.
  • Verify the device configuration and firmware, if applicable.

B. Check in System

  • Open Status/Raw Data and identify the duplicate packets.
  • Compare the timestamps, latitude, longitude, speed, and packet identifiers of the records.
  • Check whether the same packet was received multiple times.
  • Verify whether duplicates appear in the raw data or only in the map, history, report, or playback.
  • Check whether the issue occurs for other vehicles using the same device model or protocol.
  • Verify the system's data-processing and duplicate-record handling, if applicable.

C. Compare and Identify

  • Device sends duplicate packets: Investigate device configuration, firmware, or retransmission behavior.
  • Device sends one packet but system records it multiple times: Investigate system-side data processing.
  • Same coordinates with different timestamps: This may be expected if the vehicle is stationary and the device continues sending location updates.
  • Old data is received again after network recovery: Check whether the device is retransmitting stored data.

Possible Causes

  • Device retransmitting stored data.
  • Network interruption and subsequent data resend.
  • Duplicate packets generated by the device.
  • Incorrect device transmission configuration.
  • Device firmware issue.
  • Incorrect packet identification.
  • Protocol or data-parsing issue.
  • System processing the same packet more than once.
  • Vehicle remaining stationary while the device continues sending location updates.

Resolution / Action

First determine whether the duplicate records originate from the device or the system. Review the raw data, timestamps, coordinates, and packet identifiers to identify the source.

If the device is sending duplicate packets, investigate the device's configuration, firmware, network recovery, or retransmission behavior. If the device sends a single packet but the system creates multiple records, escalate the issue to the technical/system team with the vehicle ID, IMEI, affected timestamps, raw data, and screenshots.
