How to Configure Overspeed Alerts Based on Road Speed Limits

The platform supports configuring overspeed alerts based on either the actual speed limit of the road or a manually defined speed limit for a specific zone.

For example, if a vehicle is travelling on a road with a speed limit of 80 km/hr, an overspeed event can be triggered when the vehicle exceeds the applicable limit.

Symptoms / How to Identify

The requirement applies when:

  • The customer wants overspeed alerts based on the actual road speed limit.
  • Different roads have different speed limits.
  • The customer wants to define a specific speed limit for a particular zone.
  • An event should be generated when the vehicle exceeds the applicable speed limit.

Information Required Before Troubleshooting

Before configuring the alert, confirm:

  • Whether the customer wants to use the actual road speed limit or a manually defined zone speed limit.
  • Map provider being used.
  • Whether the Map provider supports the Speed Limit API.
  • Availability of the required API key.
  • Zone/geofence details and required speed limit, if using Zone-based Overspeed.
  • Required overspeed event conditions.

Troubleshooting Steps

Option 1: Road Speed API-Based Overspeed

  1. Navigate to the Map configuration under the required account level:
    Admin / Reseller / Company
  2. Configure the required Map provider.
  3. Verify that the selected Map provider supports the Speed Limit API.
  4. Configure the required API key.
  5. Once the Speed Limit API is enabled, create/configure an Over Speed Alert.
  6. Configure the alert based on the required event conditions.
  7. The system will use the applicable road speed limit received through the Map provider and compare it with the vehicle's current speed.
  8. When the vehicle exceeds the applicable road speed limit according to the configured event conditions, the overspeed event/alert will be generated.

Option 2: Zone-Based Overspeed

  1. Create a Geofence/Area for the required location.
  2. Define the speed limit for the zone. Example:
    Zone speed limit = 80 km/hr
  3. Configure the Zone Overspeed Alert.
  4. Set the required event conditions.
  5. When a vehicle is detected travelling above 80 km/hr within the configured zone, the overspeed event will be generated according to the alert configuration.

Possible Cause

The required overspeed alert may not work as expected if:

  • The Map provider does not support the Speed Limit API.
  • The required Speed Limit API key is not configured.
  • The Map configuration is not enabled at the applicable account level.
  • The Over Speed alert has not been configured correctly.
  • The required geofence/zone has not been created.
  • The zone speed limit has not been configured.
  • The event conditions are not configured as required.

Resolution / Action

Choose the configuration based on the customer's requirement:

Define a specific speed limit for an area/zone Zone-based Overspeed Alert

Example:

If the customer wants the system to automatically use the speed limit applicable to each road, use the Road Speed API.

If the customer wants a particular zone to have a fixed speed limit of 80 km/hr, create a zone and configure Zone Overspeed with an 80 km/hr limit.

Note : The Road Speed API uses the speed limit provided by the configured Map provider, while Zone-based Overspeed uses a speed limit manually defined for the specific zone.
