Why is the vehicle showing the wrong location?
Issue Title
Wrong Location
Issue Summary
The vehicle may show an incorrect location when the GPS coordinates received from the tracking device are inaccurate, outdated, invalid, or incorrectly processed by the platform. The displayed location may differ significantly from the vehicle's actual location.
Symptoms / How to Identify
- Vehicle appears at a location where it is not physically present.
- Vehicle location jumps between different or unexpected locations.
- Location is displayed far from the vehicle's actual position.
- GPS coordinates in the Status/Raw Data do not match the displayed map location.
- Vehicle location remains at an old location even after the vehicle has moved.
- Location accuracy changes frequently or shows unrealistic movements.
Information Required Before Troubleshooting
Collect the following information:
- Vehicle/Object name or ID
- Device IMEI/Serial Number
- Actual vehicle location
- Location shown on the platform
- Date and time of the incorrect location
- Screenshot of the incorrect location
- Latest GPS coordinates received from the device
- Relevant data from the Status/Raw Data section
- Whether the issue occurs continuously or only at specific locations
Troubleshooting Steps
A. Check on Device
- Check GPS signal quality.
- Verify that the device is generating valid latitude and longitude.
- Check whether GPS coordinates are changing correctly.
- Check for GPS interference or poor signal.
- Verify GPS antenna and device configuration.
- Check device firmware/configuration if required.
B. Check in System
- Check the latest received timestamp.
- Open Status/Raw Data.
- Verify the latest latitude and longitude.
- Compare raw GPS coordinates with the location shown on the map.
- Verify the correct device and vehicle mapping.
- Check whether the issue occurs for other vehicles.
C. Compare and Identify
- Incorrect coordinates from device → device/GPS issue.
- Correct coordinates but incorrect system location → system/map processing issue.
- Old coordinates being displayed → data transmission or system update issue.
Possible Causes
- Poor GPS signal or GPS interference.
- Device is receiving inaccurate GPS coordinates.
- Device is located indoors, underground, or in an area with GPS obstruction.
- Outdated location data is being displayed.
- Incorrect latitude/longitude data received from the device.
- Device configuration or GPS antenna issue.
- Incorrect device protocol/data parsing.
- Map or geocoding-related issue.
- Network/data transmission delay.
- Device hardware malfunction.
Resolution / Action
Verify the actual vehicle location against the latest GPS coordinates received from the device. If the coordinates themselves are incorrect, investigate the device's GPS signal, antenna, configuration, and hardware. If the coordinates are correct but the platform displays an incorrect location, escalate the issue to the technical/platform team with the vehicle ID, IMEI, timestamp, GPS coordinates, screenshots, and raw data for further investigation.
