Why is the vehicle location not updating?

Issue Title

  • Vehicle location not updating

Issue Summary

The vehicle location may stop updating when the platform is not receiving new GPS/location data from the tracking device or when the received location data is not being processed correctly. The vehicle may continue to display its last known location instead of its current position.

Symptoms / How to Identify

  • Vehicle remains at the same location for an unusually long time.
  • The last location time is older than expected.
  • Vehicle is moving physically, but the map location does not change.
  • New GPS coordinates are not visible in the Status/Raw Data section.
  • The vehicle may show Online, but its location remains unchanged.
  • Historical tracking may also show gaps in location updates.

Information Required Before Troubleshooting

Collect the following information:

  • Vehicle/Object name or ID
  • Device IMEI/Serial Number
  • Date and time when the location stopped updating
  • Last known location and timestamp
  • Current vehicle status
  • Screenshot of the map/location
  • Latest data received from the device
  • Whether the vehicle is actually moving
  • Whether the issue affects one vehicle or multiple vehicles

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Check the vehicle's last received data/time.
  2. Verify whether the vehicle is currently Online or Offline.
  3. Open the (System Log)Status/Raw Data section and check the latest received GPS coordinates.
  4. Compare the latest GPS coordinates with the location displayed on the map.
  5. Check whether the device is receiving valid GPS information.
  6. Verify whether the latitude and longitude values are changing when the vehicle is moving.
  7. Check for poor GPS signal, GPS errors, or invalid coordinates.
  8. Verify whether the device is transmitting data at the expected frequency.
  9. Check whether the issue is limited to a particular vehicle/device or is occurring across multiple vehicles.
  10. If valid GPS data is being received but the map is not updating, escalate the issue for platform/server-side investigation.

Possible Causes

  • Vehicle/device is not transmitting new data.
  • Poor or unavailable GPS signal.
  • Device is indoors, underground, or in an area with GPS obstruction.
  • Device power or hardware issue.
  • SIM/network connectivity problem.
  • GPS antenna or device configuration issue.
  • Invalid or unchanged GPS coordinates being sent by the device.
  • Incorrect data parsing or device protocol configuration.
  • Data transmission delay.
  • Platform/server-side processing issue.

Resolution / Action

Verify that the tracking device is powered on and transmitting valid GPS coordinates. Check the device's GPS and network status and confirm that the coordinates are changing when the vehicle moves. If valid and changing GPS data is being received but the platform location is still not updating, escalate the issue to the technical team with the vehicle ID, IMEI, timestamps, and latest raw data for further investigation.
