Harsh Braking Alert
Definition / Description
The Harsh Braking Alert is triggered when a vehicle experiences a sudden and forceful reduction in speed, indicating an instance of aggressive or unsafe braking. This alert helps fleet managers monitor driving behavior and identify potential safety risks or operational inefficiencies. By monitoring such braking incidents, fleet operators can promote safer driving practices, reduce vehicle wear and tear, and minimize accident risks.
How to Configure
- Select the Company and Branch.
- Under Based On, choose one of the following options: Vehicle, Vehicle Group or Vehicle Type
- Select the Vehicle where the alert should be applied.
- Enter an Alert Name (e.g., Harsh Braking).
- From the Alert Type dropdown, select Harsh Braking.
- Define the Speed Limit that will be used to evaluate the event.
- Enter the Ignition Off Checking Duration.
- Configure the Trigger Type: Event or Custom.
- Enter a Text Message (e.g., “Harsh Braking detected — sudden speed reduction recorded”).
- Configure Valid Day(s): Everyday or Custom
- Set Valid Time From / To (e.g., 00:00 to 23:59).
- Select the Timezone.
- Choose the Severity Level — Low, Medium, or High.
- Configure the Action to be taken when the alert is triggered: SMS, Email or Notification
- Click Save to complete the configuration.
Example / Use Case
A Harsh Braking Alert is triggered when a vehicle’s tracking device detects a sudden deceleration beyond the configured magnitude threshold. For instance, during transit, if a driver applies brakes abruptly due to an obstacle or inattentive driving, the system records a sharp drop in speed and sends a notification to the fleet manager through the selected communication channel (SMS, Email, or In-App Notification).
Based On: Event or Custom
Event: In event-based triggering, the alert relies on the magnitude value received from the device and checks whether it exceeds the configured speed limit. If a custom magnitude threshold is specified, the system evaluates the magnitude against this custom limit before generating the alert.
- Consider Magnitude: When you want the alert to be event-based but only generate when it surpasses certain magnitude value.
- Magnitude: When you enable the Consider Magnitude checkbox, you have to enter the magnitude value after which the event will be generated.
Custom: In custom-based triggering, the alert depends solely on the magnitude data received from the device. If the recorded magnitude exceeds the set speed threshold, the alert is generated.
- Magnitude: The magnitude value at which the alert will be generated.
When Based On: Vehicle, Vehicle Group, or Vehicle Type
- Vehicle: Select individual vehicles equipped with devices capable of detecting harsh braking events.
- Vehicle Group: Select a group of vehicles to monitor collectively for harsh braking incidents.
- Vehicle Type: Choose a type of vehicle category (e.g., trucks, buses) that supports acceleration and braking magnitude monitoring.
Action
The selected alert action determines how notifications are delivered:
- SMS: Must be configured under Admin, Reseller, or Company setup. Contact numbers can be added to receive instant SMS notifications.
- Email: Add email recipients to receive harsh braking alerts via email.
- In-App Notification: Choose a notification sound and specify users who should be notified within the platform.
